One day in 1934, Urano Suzu, a young girl living in Eba , Hiroshima City, is kidnapped while on her way home. However, thanks to Shusaku, a boy who was captured earlier, she manages to escape. Suzu returns home safely, but the events of the day seem like a dream. Time passes and it is the autumn of 1943. Suzu is helping out at her grandmother Morita Ito's house with her younger sister Sumi . Her aunt informed her that someone is at their house in Eba who wants Suzu as a bride. While rushing home, Suzu meets her childhood friend Mizuhara Tetsu (Murakami Nijiro), who has joined the Marine Corps . Suzu is confused as she thought Tetsu is the man. Meanwhile, at Urano household, Hojo Shusaku and his father Entaro are waiting for Suzu to return home . Suzu's father, Urano Juro, and mother, Kiseno, are embarrassed and continued their conversation. Shusaku says he had fallen in love with Suzu before, but when Suzu sneaks a peek into the house, she has no recollection of him at all.
