In Montsou, the miners work hard and are not spared from accidents that sometimes prove fatal. Etienne Lantier, in his twenties, arrives from Lille to try and make his mark after a series of incidents. He is hired at the mine and discovers harsh working conditions. The newcomer is not insensitive to the charms of Catherine, also coveted by Chaval. La Maheude struggles to feed the ten family members living under her roof . Hennebeau, the mine owner, is accountable to the company for his management.
