Jud Halsey, the editor and publisher of The Tribune newspaper, prints headlines of crimes before they actually happen. His newest headline reads ""Gold Stage Robbed-Sheriff Killed"", and has his son, Burke in charge of carrying it out. Jud hopes that Burke will be promoted to sheriff, which will mean they'll get to run the town. Burke kills the sheriff, but Gene and Pat stop the gold robbery . With that, Gene is named sheriff, although Jud and Burke protest. Burke brings in his henchman, Pete, who knocks Gene unconscious, but that doesn't stop him from continuing his job as sheriff. The next headline reads ""Stage Robbed Again-Autry killed"". Pat notices this headline, and rides after Gene, who is accompaning the stage. Pat saves Gene's life, and Jud and Burke are arrested.
