The relationship between Frode and Pavel gradually warms up. They begin to communicate more often, reminisce about the past, and try to understand whether it is possible to restore what was lost many years ago. Pavel's children become attached to Frode, who becomes almost like family to them. This causes discontent among some villagers, especially those who have long had their sights set on Pavel . One of the local women openly tells Froda that Pavel is now a free man and can choose anyone he wants — not necessarily her. Froda worries and doubts her chances for happiness.
